Couples usually attend when things are getting difficult and there are stresses and strains in the relationship. Sometimes couples attend simply to deepen their understanding of each other and how they relate.
Ruth works with people of all ages. She does both short and long term work.
Ruth has always been interested in people. She was inspired by her undergraduate degree in psychology over 30 years ago and since then has developed her knowledge, skills and experience of working with a wide range of people. Ruth worked for a few years for a large London publishing house where she learnt about the corporate world. From there she has worked with people from all backgrounds from preschool through to 80 plus. In addition to her work as a counsellor and psychotherapist she has worked as a probation officer, drug and alcohol specialist, mental health services, clinician and then senior manager in the NHS.
Ruth currently works as a supervisor to clinical staff in a local hospice, young people’s services, drug and alcohol services, private practice, welfare organisations, and improvisational theatre facilitators. She also provides bespoke and curriculum based trainings in a range of settings including: advanced diploma in counselling courses, Plymouth University School of Health and Social Care, local hospices, and third sector organisations.
Ruth is trained as an integrative counsellor, psychotherapist and supervisor. Her theoretical orientation includes developmental psychology, attachment theory, relational psychology, Gestalt, transactional analysis, cognitive behavioural psychology, systems, creativity and our relationship with our spiritual self however that is manifested. She is also a qualified social worker.
Ruth’s style is relational, down to earth and real. She works with lightness and depth touching the joy and sorrow of the human condition. She has, at her finger tips, a range of tools and techniques to support the therapeutic work. These are supported by a strong psychological theory base. She works between the here and now issues in life and their historical origins. The evidence base for successful outcomes in this work overwhelmingly supports the importance of the therapeutic relationship as the main healing factor. For Ruth creating a strong working relationship with her clients is essential.
Ruth has practiced Tai Chi for many years which is a mindful practice. This training supports her therapeutic background and practice and understanding of how we hold emotion in our bodies. Finding a way to release this is an important aspect of the work.
She is passionate about the possibility for change and that with the sufficient conditions we can all achieve our potential.
